Shift Into Neutral

Doug Wells, Mission Hills

Why he's a Stylemaker: Beige isn’t boring in this design.

The Room: Wells used a neutral palette for his living room — putty walls, brown Barcelona chairs, a caramel sofa, a sisal rug and wooden cocktail table. The color scheme creates a clean background that makes the orange painting by local artist Robert Wilson pop.

Layers of texture — soft flokati pillows, a velvety cowhide rug and sparkling glass accessories — make the room interesting. Wells also mixed metals (chrome chair legs and a gold coral lamp base) to give the room a more collected look.

THE BACKSTORY: Wells, an interior designer, collaborated with business partner Jan Kyle of Kyle Wells Design on the living room. “The neutral colors make it work,” Wells says. “They make the room serene and relaxing. At the same time they create a great background for mixing elements old and new to make the room dramatic and glamorous.”The Backstory: Wells, an interior designer, collaborated with business partner Jan Kyle of Kyle Wells Design on the living room. “The neutral colors make it work,” Wells says. “They make the room serene and relaxing.
